Thousands of years ago, before iPhones and Netflix, humans probably slept pretty decent. They would be outside, being active, getting sun during the day, and 3-4 hours after sunset, they would feel sleepy (circadian rhythm), and they’d sleep. Winters might mean an earlier bedtime; and summers might mean staying up a bit later.
But fast forward to today, with the invention of electricity and artificial light, there's all kinds of blue light in the evenings - from our screens, television, overhead lighting, and more.
Now blue light in itself is not bad, but it’s the exposure after sunset and before bed that we should seek to minimize. Phone companies like Apple have installed features like night shift to make the screen ‘warmer’ and orange looking, that can help a bit, but there’s still a lot of blue light entering our eyes. It’s this unnatural light exposure in the evenings that’s tricking our bodies that the sun hasn’t gone down yet (blue light), and making it hard for our bodies to get restful sleep at night.
So unless we plan on never using electronic devices ever again, the best thing we can do is to control what we can, to do our best given the situation. Blue light blocking glasses is one of the things we can do to help ourselves get better sleep.
Since college, we’ve tried quite a few pair of blue light blocking glasses, but never found one that we really liked and could recommend to other people. Some did the job of blocking blue light, but weren’t fashionable enough for us to feel comfortable wearing it out at night, so we decided: why not make our own?
This became the ZTU Blue Light Blocking Glasses. Made from high quality acetate material, it blocks 99-100% of blue light, and it’s so stylish even The Weeknd has been seen rocking a pair.
So next time you’re walking the streets of Hong Kong, riding the MTR home, or on your phone late at night, you’ll remember… one step towards getting better sleep is one step towards building a better version of yourself. Like the Chinese characters engraved on the side of the glasses say: Gains Don't Stop. It’s all a mindset.
